Calculator to help increasing or decreasing evenly
Using the calculator
Some patterns ask you to increase (or decrease) evenly across a row or round. At other times you may need to add or remove stitches over a number of rows. This is normally done by grouping stitches or rows together and increasing or decreasing within these groups.
This calculator allows you to work out how many stitches (or rows) there should be in each of the groups. It returns two group sizes, the number of each group that is needed, and the number of stitches (or rows) in each size group.
When you want an even increase/decrease rate across the whole range, you should intersperse the larger and smaller groups. At other times, such as an armhole, you might want to follow all repeats of one size group by all repeats of the other size.
A final adjustment when increasing or decreasing along a row or round is to start the round or row with about half the stitches in the smaller group. This will mean that you have a “margin” at the start and the end (and you will finish the row or round before you have finished the final group).
